Superscript and subscript are old typographic tricks – tiny raised or lowered characters used in footnotes, exponents, and chemical formulas for centuries. Unicode turned both into real characters instead of formatting tricks.

How Much of the Alphabet Actually Converts
Coverage is not complete, and no generator can fix that – Unicode simply never defined raised or lowered versions for every letter. Superscript covers 25 of 26 lowercase letters, missing only q, plus all ten digits.
Subscript fares worse: only 17 lowercase letters have an official code point, so b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y, and z pass through unchanged. Every digit, 0 through 9, has full subscript coverage on both.
Uppercase letters get no treatment at all in either direction – Unicode never standardized raised or lowered capitals the way it did lowercase. Type an uppercase letter and it stays exactly as typed.
What People Actually Use Superscript and Subscript For
Chemistry drives most subscript traffic – water is correctly written H₂O and carbon dioxide is CO₂, with the small numbers lowered rather than decorative. Math works the other way for exponents: x squared is properly x², with the 2 raised above the line.
